REI’s Stormproof Matches are meant to be used by backpackers, hikers and extreme sports fanatics who find themselves at a loss for fire due to inclement weather. The match will not let go of a flame until the chemical coating has entirely burned out, making it somewhat easier to start a fire in the rain (a lot of rain…like…a storm). To extinguish the fire prematurely, the 2.75″ long stick can be submerged in water for several seconds. As some user reviews will point out, this is not a box of water-proof matches…we just told you they can be extinguished by submersion in water – so attempting to dunk the entire box in a lake and then disprove the product seems stupid. The idea behind this product is that the matches are more durable than standard matches, and work best when kept dry (come on, you know you should store your matches in a ziplock bag when hiking, right?). In the event of an emergency, they can stand to be somewhat wet and still function – and some user reviews also state that they can be soaked in water overnight and still produce a flame the next day. The best part? They burn for a long time, so you can manage to get somewhat damp kindling to catch before your little fingertips burn off as they would with standard, short matches. Now that sounds pretty great, right?
